The direct answer
No ceramic coating makes car paint scratch-proof. Some products claim better resistance to light wash marks or chemicals, but dirty brushes, rough towels, branches, keys, and road debris can still damage the coating and paint.
A coating also does not fill or repair scratches that were already there.
What protection should you expect?
Think of ceramic as a thin surface layer that can help with gloss, soil release, water behavior, and some chemical exposure. Safe washing still matters because rubbing grit over the car can add swirls.
For rock chips and more meaningful impact protection, compare paint protection film. PPF is a flexible physical film made for vulnerable areas. It has its own cost, care, and limits.
DIY Snapshot
- Difficulty: Easy to inspect
- Time: About 10–20 minutes on clean, dry paint in good light
- Estimated DIY cost as of August 2026: $0 for inspection
- Good beginner DIY?: Yes, but a photo cannot show scratch depth
- Consider a professional if: A mark catches your eye after washing, shows missing color, crosses an edge, or needs correction, touch-up, body repair, or PPF advice
Should you coat a scratched car?
A coating can go over sound paint that still has minor marks, but it will not hide them. Decide whether appearance improvement is worth safe polishing before the coating goes on.
Preserving healthy paint can be better than chasing every line. Ask the detailer to separate correction from coating in the quote.
