The direct answer
Polishing can remove or reduce some shallow scratches in glossy paint. It cannot replace paint that is missing, and full removal is not always the safest goal.
The process removes a tiny amount of top finish around the mark. Chasing a deep scratch can cause more harm than leaving a faint line.
How can you judge a scratch?
Wash and inspect it in good light. A wet mark or fingernail check offers only a clue. Neither proves safe removal. Primer, bare metal, plastic, cracks, or missing color call for touch-up or repair.
DIY Snapshot
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Time: About 30–90 minutes for one cleaned test area
- Estimated DIY cost as of August 2026: About $20–$45 for a hand-applied spot setup
- Good beginner DIY?: With caution on ordinary glossy factory paint
- Consider a professional if: The scratch shows another color, crosses an edge, sits on repaired or special paint, or remains after one conservative test
Use the least aggressive useful option
Follow the product label, test a small area, and inspect before repeating. Stop if the finish becomes hazy, hot, discolored, or stops improving. Do not begin with sandpaper or a rotary machine.
Houston one-step services reviewed in August 2026 started around $279–$500. Ask whether a small-area service or body repair fits better than a full correction.
