The direct answer
Yes. Abrasive polishing removes a tiny amount of painted surface, so correction is not unlimited. There is no honest rule that every car can be polished a set number of times.
The safe limit depends on the paint, prior work, repairs, panel shape, defect depth, product, tool, and technique.
Do you need a paint-thickness gauge?
No gauge is required for routine care or DashDrive's consumer guide. A provider may use one as optional context during advanced work, but a reading cannot identify every layer, repair, or safe amount to remove.
DIY Snapshot
- Difficulty: Advanced for repeated or aggressive correction
- Time: 30–60 minutes for inspection and a test spot; hours for a full service
- Estimated DIY cost as of August 2026: About $110–$200 for a machine setup, but owning tools does not prove another correction is safe
- Good beginner DIY?: Not for deciding how much more corrected paint can lose
- Consider a professional if: The car was corrected before, repair history is unknown, defects are deep, or paint is peeling, cracked, matte, or high-value
Preserve more paint
Leaving a deeper scratch and improving the rest can protect more finish while adding gloss. Ask for a test spot and improvement target, not a promise that every defect will vanish.
Houston menus reviewed in August 2026 began around $279–$500 for one-step and $449–$800 for two-step work.
